Hawbush Community Garden is a beautiful site located on the Hawbush Estate, within the DY5 area of Brierley Hill. Formerly known as Hawbush Urban Farm, over the years, the land had become neglected and overgrown. However in 2014, a small group of volunteers began work to restore the gardens to their natural beauty. The result was the creation of a peaceful and unique oasis nestled within the community. The gardens include several allotment plots, an orchard with beehives, the peaceful Queen’s memorial garden, as well as a woodland area, a large pond and picnic area.
The communities across the Hawbush, Brockmoor and Brierley Hill area face many social and economic challenges with some families suffering significant deprivation. And so our vision has been to restore and develop the gardens as a sanctuary that can offer relief to many of the issues that families have to face on a regular basis. Both the gardens and our community building allow our volunteers to host events and activities, as well as gardening and social engagement. We aim to provide a safe space and an environment that can allow recovery from anxiety and depression, promote health and wellbeing, as well as the opportunity to develop self-confidence and a hope for the future. We host a range of activities throughout the year for a number of regular and external groups and individuals.
Established as a charity in November 2016, we have two main objectives:
As part of the original vision for Hawbush Gardens, our volunteers have continued to supply freshly grown fruit and vegetables in season. Our latest donations, in 2024, mainly to Black Country Foodbank, totalling over 500kg of homegrown produce, including over 187kg of potatoes and 82kg of cucumbers!
